712 - Peace & Life: Actions/Infant Mortality/Success/SNAP - August 2, 2024

Actions

This week’s blog post explains the danger of proposed cuts to the SNAP (food stamps) program. To send an email to your congresspeople opposing cuts to SNAP, go here

Emmanuel Littlejohn was sentenced to death even though he didn't kill anyone, and the actual shooter got a life sentence. Death Penalty Action is asking for personal notes to be sent by postal mail before the August 7 parole hearing to:

 Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board

4345 N. Lincoln Blvd., Suite 1082

Oklahoma City, OK 73105

The Pro-life Action League has composed a letter, with versions for Walgreens and CVS, which people can print out and hand to pharmacists at those stores to advise them of their conscientious objection rights and educate about abortion pills. You can print their letter or use it as a draft you can revise to your liking.

And Our Action

Our next quarterly peace vigil to protest nuclear weapons will be on Saturday, August 10th, from 10 am to 12 pm ET, on the roadway in front of the White House.

The American Solidarity Party of Maryland and DCPax Christi Metro DC-Baltimore, and Rehumanize International are co-sponsoring and other groups are welcome to join us. For more information, contact John Whitehead at jwwhiteh@yahoo.com.

Infant Mortality

A mother and her small child against the background of a sunset

A recent study showing infant mortality has risen a bit in Texas after its abortion ban. Well, of course it’s risen. Here’s why:

Pre-Dobbs, a set of prenatal children were aborted due to severe medical problems. Who died? Every one of them. Who was counted as having died? Not a single one.

Post-Dobbs, with abortion bans in place, many of those children aren’t aborted. But they still have the severe medical problems. So, tragically, once born, a portion of them die. Unlike those exact same children at fetal stage, because they made it to infancy, their deaths are counted.

So fewer children have died, and those who did died of natural causes - rather than being deliberately and brutally killed.

Our Latest Blog Posts

Sarah Terzo offers the two latest posts:

Successes We Never Know About offers heartening stories of lives saved by actions which activists didn’t realize had that impact on stopping abortions. (For a similar take on peace movement success that wasn’t known to the activists, see Documentary Review: The Movement and the Madman)

Jessica Rojas and daughter Eden

On a recent matter of legislative urgency, Sarah covers how lethal proposed cuts to what was once called the food stamp program would be in SNAP Cuts? More Poverty, More Abortion.

Quotation of the Week

Patrick T. Brown

The New York Times, July 19, 2024

Along the way, many of us found ourselves in the Republican Party, often picking up other conservative causes along the way — low taxes, limited government, strong defense, border security. The bundle of preferences could be a bit ungainly at times, but we found progressive voices quick to shout down attempts for pro-lifers to work with Democrats. So the G.O.P. became home.

It’s hard to feel that way now . . . it appears that it is no longer just one political party that wants us to shelve our convictions in the name of political expediency. It’s both.

Editor’s note: Another case where we quote someone who isn’t a consistent-lifer, but the point about peace and justice activists being unwise to push away pro-lifers is one we’ve made for a long time. For several more quotes on the theme of Trump abandoning pro-lifers, see Trump Sabotaging the Pro-Life Movement.
